The start of a new year inevitably brings with it an entire collection of fashion trends.Whether your resolution is to take more style risks or hone in on your wardrobe, we, together with J.C. Le Roux have rounded up the looks to weave into your wardrobe to help best express yourself and your style in 2018. According to the runways, the street style set, and the best-dressed celebs, these are the emerging fashion trends to watch this year.
1 Belt Up
Time to nip it in the bud and accentuate that waist. This accessory trend seems to be the go-to item for most A-listers, which means we, too, need to stack our cupboards. Tie the waist-defining accessory over dresses, jumpsuits and jackets.
2 Lavender Dreams
Millennial pink had its moment, but the Spring ’18 runways are pointing to the next big colour takeover — and it’s shades of lilac on everything. We saw lavender on the runways of both Victoria Beckham and Proenza Schouler, and we couldn’t be more pleased. Pair the pale purple frenzy with well-worn denim or a clashing red lip.
Feathers made a surprise comeback this season. Far from their (very tired) festival manifestations, these wispy tufts are taking flight in the fashion world, in the form of feather-embellished skirts, hats, belts and shoes..
4 Life in plastic, it’s fantastic
From coloured vinyl to clear PVC, waterproof plastics were a predominant look for Spring ’18. Whether you’re facing a rainstorm like the models at Chanel’s Spring 2018 show or you simply want to try standout PVC accessories, this year will undoubtedly be filled with clear shiny pieces.
5 Mad for Plaid
Insanely elegant, refined and sophisticated, yet a little bit edgy, checks can be seen all the way from the runways to the street style scene outside the shows. The grey plaid blazer has been dominating our Instagram feeds and now, in 2018, head-to-toe tartan is proving that plaid is here to stay.
6 Suit up
There is nothing more versatile than a blazer, especially one that you can mix and match with the rest of your wardrobe. Cool, modern, hip shapes of this indispensable fashion requisite overtook the runway, paired with matching pants in a variety of patterns and styles.
7 Ear Dazzlers
Get ready to let your statement-making earrings do all the talking this year. Over-the-top earrings started making their comeback last year and the trend is only getting stronger this coming season. Embrace the trend with mismatched, asymmetrical and giant door-knocker styles.
8 The New Trench
If there’s one item that continually proves itself to be a fashion icon, it’s the trench coat. Designers are constantly reimagining the style, and this year, the classic staple was officially the key piece in many collections, including those of Michael Kors, Phillip Lim and Versace. In 2018, this wardrobe essential gets a contemporary update with frills, sliced silhouettes, and oversized belts and lapels.
Love art? Well, now you can wear it. Art-inspired patterned gowns, shirts and trousers were seen at Stella McCartney, while the runways at Versace were brightened up by prints inspired by American artist Andy Warhol. This bold, colourful and rich trend is a great way to shake up your wardrobe.
10 Double Up
New year, new bag. Yes, please! And why have only one when you can have two? Yes, you read right. Sometimes a single bag just doesn’t cut it, which is why we are thrilled that designers like Chloe and Fendi are giving us all kinds of multi-bagging options that are stylish rather than bag-ladyish.
